2021 APACRS GOLD MEDAL The APACRS Gold Medal is the most prestigious medal awarded to outstanding ophthalmologists in the Asia-Pacific region for their significant and outstanding contributions to the development of ophthalmology, particularly in cataract and refractive surgery in the Asia-Pacific region. Dr. Chan Wing Kwong is a Senior Consultant and Partner at Eye & Retina Surgeons, Camden Medical and a Visiting Senior Consultant of the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC). He practices general ophthalmology, cataract surgery and sub-specializes in refractive surgery and corneal diseases. Prior to leaving for private medical practice in 2008, he was the Head and Senior Consultant of the Refractive Surgery Service at the SNEC. During his tenure at SNEC from 1992 to 2008, he was a member of its executive committee, management committee and chairman of the IT committee. He graduated from the National University of Singapore with the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 1985. In 1991, Dr. Chan obtained the degree of Master of Medicine (Ophthalmology) from the National University of Singapore and was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He was admitted as a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine of Singapore in 1996. Dr. Chan was awarded a Health Manpower Development Program scholarship by the Ministry of Health (Singapore) to undergo sub-specialty training in corneal and refractive surgery in 1994-95 at the Jules Stein Eye Institute of the UCLA School of Medicine, USA. He has published 26 scientific papers and 6 book chapters on laser vision correction, corneal diseases, contact lenses, and cataracts. He has participated in 15 local and international clinical trials of refractive and corneal surgery as a principal investigator, co-investigator, or medical monitor. Dr. Chan is recognized as a key opinion leader in the field of laser vision correction and has trained many surgeons in LASIK surgery from Singapore and the Asia-Pacific region. He was the winner of the Muthusamy Medal for the Fellowship examination of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and was awarded the Gold Medal for the Master of Medicine (Ophthalmology) examination of the National University of Singapore in 1991. He received the Distinguished Service Award of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology in 1999 and the APACRS Certified Educator (A.C.E.) Award in 2002. In 2006, Dr. Chan was awarded the Minister of Health Award for Outstanding Performance in Public Health. Dr. Chan was the Chairman of the Contact Lens Practitioners Board from 2002 to 2008 and Chairman of the National Committee on Ophthalmology from 2004 to 2005.
