2023 APACRS GOLD MEDAL The APACRS Gold Medal is awarded to outstanding ophthalmologists in the Asia-Pacific for their significant and outstanding contributions to the development of ophthalmology, particularly in cataract and refractive surgery in the region. Dr Fam Han Bor Singapore Dr Fam Han Bor is a graduate from the National University of Singapore with a Masters in Medicine (Ophthalmology) and was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh and the Academy of Medicine, Singapore. He completed his subspecialty training in cornea and refractive surgery at the University of British Columbia, Canada. Dr Fam holds a number of senior appointments at The Eye Institute at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore. In addition to his appointment as the Senior Consultant and Pioneer Head of Service for Cataract, Implant and Anterior Segment, he is also credited as the founding head of the sub-specialty of anterior segment surgery. With a deep commitment and enduring interest, Dr Fam has pursued his passion to further the fields of visual optics, wavefront science, IOL calculations, corneal topography, contact lens and eye modelling, biofilms, and phacoemulsification technology. The result of this is almost 20 years’ worth of publications in leading peer-reviewed ophthalmology journals such as the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, the Journal of Refractive Surgery, the American Journal of Ophthalmology and the British Journal of Ophthalmology. He is a co-author of the book “A Clinician’s Guide to Slit-Scanning Corneal Topography” and a contributor to the book “Corneal topography – From Theory to Practice”. Upcoming is his book chapter on advanced intraocular power calculations. He is also the patent holder for an enhanced occlusion removal system during phacoemulsification. Since 2007, Dr Fam has been an active member of the elite IOL Power Club, a think-tank of scientists and clinicians at the forefront of the advancements in IOL power calculations, optical technology and their translation into clinical outcomes. In addition, he is a member of the prestigious International IntraOcular Implant Club founded by Sir Harold Ridley. Given his professional commitment to the field of visual optics, Dr Fam has given more than 500 presentations in cataract and refractive surgery in various international and regional conferences. As an educator, he has conducted over 50 instructional courses, including master classes in biometry, cataract and refractive surgery, medical-in-service and live surgeries throughout Asia. He has sat in more than 70 expert panels related to cataract and refractive surgery. In recognition of his continuing contributions to the field of ophthalmology, he was recognized with the Asia-Pacific Association of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons Certified Educator Award (A.C.E) in 2007 and awarded the Gold Medal at the EyeAdvance Meeting in Mumbai 2012. 17
