Graham BARRETT, Australia

Since completing his residency in ophthalmology, Graham David Barrett has made extensive and varied contributions to the field. A pioneer and leader both in his home country of Australia and internationally, Barrett has served on the boards of several international, highly-regarded ophthalmology societies and sat on several industry editorial boards, including as Chief Medical Editor of the EyeWorld Asia-Pacific publication.

Barrett co-founded the Australasian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (AUSCRS) in 1995 and served as its President for over 25 years. Under his leadership, the society developed a thriving community of professionals committed to advancing cataract and refractive surgery. At a regional level, Barrett served as President of the Asia Pacific Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (APACRS) from 2000 to 2015, playing an instrumental role in establishing APACRS and its annual meeting as the pre-eminent forum for cataract and refractive surgery in the Asia Pacific region.

This commitment to advancing cataract and refractive surgery — and to improving patient outcomes — has also driven Barrett to develop numerous pioneering instruments and innovations. These include the world's first foldable IOL, implanted in 1983; the widely used Barrett Toric Formula and Calculator; and the RayOne EMV, the first and only IOL optimized for use with monovision.

Barrett has received numerous awards and honours, including the Norman Gregg Medal from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists, the APACRS Gold Medal, and the José I. Barraquer Lecture and Award from the International Society of Refractive Surgery. He also broke new ground by becoming the first Australian ophthalmologist to win the Binkhorst, Choyce, Ridley, and Susruta awards in the same year.

This body of work culminated in Barrett being recognized in the 2022 Queen's Birthday Honours for Australia, receiving the honorary title of Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to ophthalmology and to professional organizations.
