2021 SNEC NAMED LECTURES Inaugural SNEC VisionSave Lecture Advances in Gene Therapy Prof. Ian Constable is Lions Founding Professor of Ophthalmology at The University of Western Australia and a consultant ophthalmologist. He was appointed the foundation professor of ophthalmology and retinal surgeon at Royal Perth Hospital in 1975 before establishing the Lions Eye Institute (LEI) in 1983, where he was Managing Director until February 2009. Prof. Constable was appointed Patron of the LEI in 2018. He continues to practice and conduct research at the LEI and at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital with a special interest in diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and second opinions for complex eye problems. Prof. Constable is past president of the APAO, APVRS, and the Asia-Pacific Association of University Professors. He was also closely associated with the founder of SNEC, Prof. Arthur Lim, from 1976 onwards as a co-author, international teaching colleague and regional advisor. SNEC 30 th Anniversary Lecture Transforming Healthcare with AI – Lessons from Ophthalmology Prof. Pearse Keane is a consultant ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London and a clinician scientist and professor at University College London, Institute of Ophthalmology. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of AMD and other complex macular diseases. Prof. Keane’s research focuses on the application of new technologies to ophthalmology. In 2016, he initiated collaboration between Moorfields and Google DeepMind to develop artificial intelligence algorithms for the earlier detection and treatment of retinal disease. In August 2018, their first results were published in Nature Medicine . Originally from Ireland, he received his medical degree from University College Dublin. In 2015, he became the first ophthalmologist in the UK to receive a “Clinician Scientist” award from the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR). Ian CONSTABLE Australia Pearse KEANE UK 28
